AL Level Descriptions

GENERAL SPEAKING ABILITY:

The student’s spoken English is both fluent and accurate. He adapts his talk to the demands of different contexts with increasing confidence. His talk engages the interest of the listener through the variety of its vocabulary and expression. He takes an active part in discussion, showing understanding of ideas and sensitivity to others. He speaks very well and never had problems communicating his ideas. He is usually fluent in his use of standard English in both formal and informal situations.

GRAMMAR for Speaking:

The student shows a comprehensive and accurate use of grammar. He constructs his ideas in a well-organized manner. He applies various areas of grammar for a specific purpose, and can do business transactions in English well.

VOCABULARY for Speaking:

The student has a wide variety of vocabulary to talk about. He uses words appropriately for any specific situations. He knows well of collocation, phrasal verbs, colloquial and idiomatic expressions, and if he happens to commit mistakes, he corrects it immediately.

PRONUNCIATION for Speaking:

The student structures what he says clearly, using appropriate intonation and emphasis. He uses word stress to show the appropriate change in the meaning of the words or sentences.

LISTENING for Speaking:

The student can listen and comprehend all kinds of texts like the news from CNN or ABC. He can construct his opinions or questions based on the materials using some complex grammatical structures. He can listen to all kinds of speeches of varying length and can give its gist. He usually listens for details using key words to extract specific information. His responses to the texts show that he had listened perceptively and sensitively and knows how to adapt to speaker’s style, medium and context.

Fluency for Speaking:
